Cleveland, Ohio – September 9th 2005 -- Efficient Channel Coding (ECC) announced today they have received a contract from the Defense Information System Agency (DISA) to demonstrate the bandwidth savings that can be achieved for the Global Broadcast Service (GBS) by using the DVB-S2 waveform. The effort is funded by OSD’s Defense Acquisition Challenge Program (DACP) with the objective to introduce new technology into operational programs. The DACP is extremely competitive; in 2005, approximately 350 proposals were submitted to the DACP, with only about 12 awards, with this contract being one of the awards.
The highly bandwidth efficient, commercial DVB-S2 ground receiver when introduced into the Global Broadcast Service (GBS) will result in an increase of satellite transponder throughput greater than 30%, resulting in significantly reduced operational costs and increased capability to the warfighter. For example, DVB-S2 receivers have very power efficient modes that will allow the direct broadcasting of information to a small manpack antenna. As a result, the warfighter will have greater mobility while receiving more definitive and timely information.
Under this effort ECC will provide specialized DVB-S2 transmitter and receiver equipment that will include the capability to operate in the Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) mode. The VCM mode provided by the new standard will allow optimization of broadcast waveform allowing the simultaneous transmission of information to each specific terminal set with a different aperture size to provide additional bandwidth efficiency gains and allow for smaller terminals to be served.
“ECC is proud that DISA and the DACP challenge program have concluded that our approach to DVB-S2 has the potential to provide a real impact to the GBS system. The power of ECC’s DVB-S2 will allow the GBS system to realize large transponder savings and significantly increased flexibility, ultimately resulting in new capability at reduced costs.” said Dr. Richard Gedney, business development manager at ECC. “ECC is the first vendor to include the capability to perform VCM as well as the Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) modes in its DVB-S2 solutions.
